2015_SEEING THROUGH THE DOLERITE-SEISMIC IMAGING OF PETROLEUM SYSTEMS, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA

Oil and Gas industry published paper with Malcom Bendall, the lead, co-authoring the paper with 4 other oil industry experts..

"Two independent calculations of mean undiscovered potential (or prospective) resources in structures defined so far by Empire’s seismic surveys are

596.9 millions and 668.8 millions of barrels of oil equivalent"— Conclusion of fact based analysis

Yet, this conclusion has been rejected by some. The reality is that no matter what the field and no matter what facts are, all too often, sceptics and critics abound.

The attached paper "Seeing through the dolerite-seismic imaging of petroleum systems, Tasmania, Australia" was written by a group of 5-industry experts with Malcom Bendall, the lead, co-authoring the paper with 4 other oil industry experts. It was published in the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) Journal in 2015. APPEA is the national body representing Australia’s upstream oil and gas exploration and production industry. Its members account for an estimated 98 per cent of the nation’s petroleum production.

For a paper to be accepted for publication in the APPEA Journal, essentially, it must be able to withstand critical peer review.

 The 4-co-authors were:

Paul Heath, BSc(Hons)degree from the University of Tasmania. Geologist. Member: Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM). Accomplished global oil executive.

Clive Burrett, BSc (Hons) from the University of London, PhD from the University of Tasmania. Fellow of the Geological Society of Australia. He is an expert on the geology of Tasmania, Southeast Asia and China. Clive is resident at the Palaeontological Research and Education Centre at Mahasarakham University in Thailand, working on the palaeontology, geology and tectonics of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries.

Andrew Stacey,  PhD from the University of Tasmania. Member: Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)

Enzo Zappaterra, PhD. Certified petroleum geologist. Has years of active oil and gas exploration with Chevron and its affiliates in many of the world’s oil basins (Europe, Africa, South America and Asia). For 20-years, New Ventures Director of Global Exploration Service leading worldwide consulting services on international petroleum exploration

 The Paper Concluded:

The highly irregular pre-Parmeener unconformity can be mapped across Tasmania and large anticlines (Bellevue and Thunderbolt prospects and Derwent Bridge Anticline) and probable reefs can be seismically mapped beneath this unconformity within the Ordovician Larapintine Petroleum System. Two independent calculations of mean undiscovered potential (or prospective) resources in structures defined so far by Empire’s seismic surveys are 596.9 MMBOE (millions of barrels of oil equivalent) and 668.8 MMBOE.

Despite the independent expert summations in this published paper and despite $62 million of exploratory drilling by Malcolm's company, the views of sceptics and critics cast dispersions over this long term project.

The paper has been included as it both instructive and a counterpoint to any chatter.
